Description

Starting with 4.7 and when we changed the BSP blocks in Sample Content to Static Meshes, a significant minority of lower end PC users are getting soft crashes (freezes and rebooting required to continue) on building lighting in these projects or using assets from these projects and building lighting.

The Floor in First Person Template for example is set to 2048 and the walls and blocks are 1024. For our users with only 4GB to 8GB of RAM these settings can cause freezes or significantly long build times in which the computer appears to crash (30 to 45 mins for First Person Template).

Example DXDIAG from Lower End PC User attached below.

Steps to Reproduce

Assumes you are on a PC close to included DXDIAG Specs:

  1. Open a First Person Template Project With No Starter Content
  2. Select the Floor Static Mesh
  3. Note the Overridden Lightmap Resolution of 2048
  4. Build Lighting

RESULTS: Soft Crash, Freeze for 30 to 45 mins

EXPECTED: No Freeze with a Build Time closer to 10 to 15 mins
