This seems to only happen when the editor has focus after closing VRPreview / VR-Editor. If you alt-tab have focus on another program it goes to SteamVR waiting room.
with HTC vive
Result: In-headset the last stereo image is frozen (until vr-edit mode is resumed)
Expect: Go back to SteamVR Lobby screen... OR in the least a black screen to prevent discomfort.
