The VR Template in 4.14 had a node in the level blueprint to enable stereo mode at the start of the game, but it has been removed in 4.15:

Maybe the "console command" wasn't the best option, and it should instead be either the "start in vr" flag in project settings:

Or the Enable HMD node should be used on begin play

But the VR template should start in VR by default in a packaged game
