A hard crash can happen when applying auto convex collision to a complex mesh that is below a certain build scale or screen size. The meshes that cause this have higher poly counts and increasing the size of the mesh can prevent the crash.
Confirmed crash in:
4.10 releases CL-2791327
4.11 CL-2804793
4.12 Dev-Framework - CL-2803635
1. Open UE4
2. Import Attached Asset or use SM_Statue from Starter Content
3. Open the Static Mesh
4. Adjust it's build size so that the mesh is barely visible. (The attached mesh will import with this scale. If using the SM_Statue, set the build scale to 0.001 for XYZ in the Build Settings and apply
5. In the Auto Convex Collision hit Apply for the default settings
Results: The editor will hard crash with no crash reporter window.
Expected: The editor will not crash.
